The Weekend in College Basketball

I have to say, in terms of Basketball this was one of my favorite weekends in a while. It was upset city in college basketball, and I would just like to give my views and opinions on the biggest games of the weekend.

These Rankings are from the USA Today Poll that came out Monday 1/31.

St. Johns-93 #5 Duke-78
I cant say I watched this entire game, though I did check out most of the first half. It wasn't really a game from the opening tip, St. Johns controlled the paint and played a solid perimeter game as well, not forcing outside shots or turning the ball over. Also Kyle Singler struggling (7-17 from the field) really hurt the blue devils. They cannot win on a one man Nolan Smith show. Aside from the obvious what made this game a blowout? I see two huge points. The first being the experience of St. Johns. Any team where more the half the team are seniors is going to be competitive, no matter who they are playing. The second being, the Big East is proving more then just a little dominance over the college basketball world. That was not a fluke win. Duke is ranked 3rd in the country, St. Johns is 11th in the Big East. How does that add up? And one more thing, all the fans in Cameron Indoor really need you to get healthy Kyrie Irving.

#13 Louisville- 79 #7 Uconn-78
Now usually this couldn't be considered an upset, given its the Big East and these are both top 20 teams. However Uconn was in the top ten, and more importantly it was at Uconn. Winning on the road is huge, and Louisville pulled that off in a double OT thriller. Another huge surprise to me in this game, was Louisville didn't outscore Uconn from three point land. I see Louisville as a live and die by the three team, and to show they can win on the road while not outscoring an opponent from three shows a lot. But this game showed more about Uconn. Kemba Walker, national player of the year candidate, shot 7-23 with only 20 points. He is a great player, but watching this game, he forced shots for no good reason. He has a good team around him, when the shot isn't falling you cant force up 23 shots. Also, I see a huge lack of effort on his part. A 30 foot three point shot to try to win the game when your only down 1? No going to cut it Kemba, you need to learn how to play for the team rather then yourself sometimes. And, your not Jimmer, though you try sometimes. One more thing, look for Jeremy Lamb for the rest of Uconn's season. He is coming on as a real scoring threat for the Huskies.

#14 Georgetown-69 #12 Villanova-66
True, this is not much of an upset, more of a close game that could have gone either way but once again, a Big East team won on the road, which is the only way you can win this conference. Stokes continued his struggles from the Providence game, only shooting 4-10 from the field. Fisher only scored 15 points and if that guard tandem cannot preform at a high level then Nova will struggle to win any game. The game was truly about Georgetown's offense however, shooting 52% from the field. Austin Freeman is finally playing up to the level he can, turning it on these last few games, scoring 30 against Nova. A close game was a result of the timely scoring by Villanova and a home court advantage. However, these are two teams headed in opposite directions, and unless the backcourt of Nova can wake up, they will continue to slide with a brutal schedule.

New Mexico-86 #9 BYU-77
Jimmer Fredette must have had a bad game right? Because BYU is way too good to fall to any MWC team with that star power right? False. Jimmer went for 32 points which is above his season average, and shot 6-9 from three, with the typical 30 foot fade away shots that leave my jaw dropped for at least 30 seconds. Your average college basketball fan wouldn't know much about New Mexico, and for good reason. Sitting at 15-7 and only a 3-4 record in the MWC, they would be lucky to be on the bubble without having a good run and competing with BYU and San Diego State for the Conference, which seems unlikely. Bottom line, you don't have to know much about New Mexico. What you have to know is that unless Jimmer goes for 40 a game, this team is overrated and does not have much talent. One guy can carry you a long way (ask Steph Curry about that), however they will not make you a top ten team. Unless they get a good base of scoring and a new found defense (New Mexico shot 50% from the field), you won't have to worry about BYU staying a top ten team for long.

Marquette-76 #17 Syracuse- 70
If you want to understand why this doesn't surprise me, read my previous article on the Big East. Syracuse is sliding a lot and suddenly that unbeatable 2-3 zone looks lackluster at best. Syracuse can score, and they are. They shot 57% from the field and lost! 14 turnovers on the road in the Big East though, not going to cut it. Sure you could say this isn't a big deal because Cuse was on the road, however dropping 4 straight? That is a big deal. It is all about the defense too, which we usually see is Syracuse's high point. So what exactly is the issue? It is the same zone as usual right? Thats the point. The soft spots are getting exposed, and teams come in with confidence that breaking it will be easy. Also, Cuse is missing the quick hands of a player like Andy Rautins, who could have 5 steals in any given game. Also, who is making the big shot? There are a lot of questions with the Syracuse team, and unless Coach Boeheim answers them, they will quickly fall out of the Big East standings. Much props to Marquette too they are winning at home and games they are supposed to, and at 15-8 you cannot sleep on a team with explosive offense from stars Jimmy Butler and Darius Johnson-Odom.

Nebraska-57 #16 Texas A&M-48
Before I discuss this game, which will be brief because this was not an interesting game, Nebraska is 15-5. They play basketball in Lincoln too, and they have a good team this year. The "Upstart Aggies" as many were calling them loose a bad road game to a good Nebraska team, and people are surprised? Texas A&M has been struggling to score all year, being 121st in the country with only 70 points a game. They play great defense, and can rebound the ball, but you need to score, especially with the teams in the Big 12. Texas A&M was considered highly underrated, but now we see that we just overrated them. Sure, at 17-3 they are a good team but getting blown out by Texas was no fluke. This team has no go to scorer, especially with Middleton (15.7 ppg) struggling of late. With only 12 points in the Nebraska game, there is no chance for them to win. Frankly unless this team find offense, especially with Texas coming to town tonight at 9, look for a fast fall in the rankings for the Aggies.

Penn State-56 #18 Wisconsin-52
As we have seen over the last few years, Wisconsin always plays like a top 20 team at home, but on the road not so much. Playing typical Wisconsin defense, even with a very poor shooting performance should beat Penn State on the road right? False. The real story of this game is not Wisconsin it is Penn State. Finally they are competitive in the Big 10. Sure, at only 12-8 they have a very slim chance at competing with Ohio State for the Big 10. But they have a chance to even sneak into the bubble. Whats different this year? The simple answer is Taylor Battle. This kid is no joke at all, he is averaging big numbers (20.4ppg, 3.3apg). More importantly, he is leading them to wins. They also beat Michigan State, Illinois and were seconds away from beating #10 Purdue and #1 Ohio State. They are getting better, and every team in the Big 10 has to be weary, no one wants to go to University Park nowadays. Watch out for The Nittany Lions traveling to #24 Illinois tomorrow night.
In my mind those were the major upsets of the weekend. Other upsets include:

Washington St.-87 #19Washington-80
In state rivalry, at Washington St, I don't see it as an upset, just more of the Pac-10 beating up on each other. Both teams will probably make the tournament, and the Pac-10 is weak, just like it was last year. Not a big deal in the college basketball world. (One more note Isiah Thomas is once again playing well, averaging 17.1 points a game and in chase for Pac-10 player of the year.)

Arkansas-89 #24 Vandy- 78
SEC basketball? Nothing important nowadays unless your Kentucky. This game comes down to Arkansas is not a bad team in terms of the SEC, and if you can outscore the Commodores, they are not an impressive team.

One more note: Pitt and Ohio State barley edged by non-ranked opponents Rutgers and Northwestern. They both impressed me by fighting through horrible shooting performances in hostile arenas.

Re: Big East

I am still in amazement at that last post and I think I agreed with every word of it (shockingly).  Granted I have the advantage of last night's Marquette win over Syracuse and today's St. John's win over Duke, but I will do my own assessment.  First and foremost, Syracuse should not be in the Top Ten of the country...they shouldn't have last Monday either but certainly not after losing their fourth straight.  They do have a chance to redeem themselves this week at UConn but that is also UConn's chance at countering their Louisville loss.  St. John's proved just how deep the depth of the Big East and come tournament time I see no reason why 11-14 teams from the Big East will not make the tournament.  The committee should want the best teams and with the hot year the Big East is having and the off-year most other conferences are having (just when you though Florida St. was good, they lose at Clemson), the Big East will satisfy your needs.  Finally, as impossible as this is to predict accurately, I will give my own version of the Big East standings right now:

My Rank - Name (Record, BE Record) - Actual BE Standing
1 - Pittsburg (20-2, 8-1) - 1
2 - Louisville (17-4, 6-2) - 2
*Pitt @ L'vill on 2/27 @ 2pm*
3 - Notre Dame (17-4, 6-3) - 3
4 - Connecticut (17-3, 6-3) - 4
5 - Villanova (17-4, 5-3) - 5
6 - Marquette (14-8, 5-4) - 7
7 - West Virginia (14-6, 5-3) - 6
*gotta go with the head-to-head, which hurts G-town because I think they are better than Marq but not WVU...typical Big East conundrum*
8 - Georgetown (16-5, 5-4) - 10
*the win over Nova and the hot streak they are on mean a lot to me*
9 - Syracuse (18-4, 5-4) - 8
10 - Cincinnati (18-4, 5-4) - 9
*plays Pitt next, big chance to make statement*
11 - St. John's (12-8, 4-5) - 11
*yes I think every team above them can beat Duke too*
12 - Seton Hall (9-12, 3-6) - 13
*gotta account for the time Hazel missed and this is the Big East rankings, not national; their guard play allows them to match-up well in the Big East but Rutgers may have the edge outside the conference against teams like Missouri, Kansas St., Florida St., Clemson, etc.*
13 - Rutgers (12-9, 3-6) - 12
14 - Providence (13-8, 2-6)
*the sleeper team (not that every other team isn't), but like Jordan has pointed out, Providence is starting to click now and it will be interesting to see how they do against the top teams in this conference when they have a little momentum behind them*
15 - South Florida (8-14, 2-7) - 15
*this Big East basketball, not Big East football but WATCH OUT: USF plays Prov next, a game they won at home on 1/16 but this time it's in Providence where Providence just downed Louisville and Villanova in back-to-back games so this will be one of the most intriguing #14 vs #15 game you have ever seen
16 - Depaul (6-14) - 16

With the games remaining in conference play, the Big East will continue to provide with great basketball to watch, as they have in years past and will continue to for many years to come.

Big East

The Big East is once again the best conference in college basketball, to no ones surprise. First let me post the current big east standings.

Pittsburgh7-119-2
Louisville6-217-4
Notre Dame6-317-4
Connecticut5-317-3
Villanova5-317-4
Syracuse5-318-3
Cincinnati5-318-3
West Virginia4-313-6
Georgetown5-416-5
Marquette4-413-8
St. John's4-511-8
Rutgers3-512-8
Seton Hall3-69-12
Providence2-613-8
South Florida2-78-14
DePaul0-86-1

(From ESPN.com)

You could look at every team in this conference (with the exception of DePaul and South Florida), as NCAA tournament caliber teams. It shows with the high out of conference wins. You look at Uconn beating Texas, West Virginia beating Purdue, Pitt beating Texas, and multiple teams beating up on Michigan State. Those are just the easiest examples to throw out. So the question looms, who is the best team in the Big East? Or another question; who is going to make the big dance? In regards to the best team, it would be easy to just say Pitt because they are first. However, take in account the Notre Dame just beat Pitt, and Psycho T's little brother Ben is looking like a big east player of the contender, that is, if Kemba Walker didn't already lock that up. You go below Pitt and see just as much talent in Louisville, a team that just beat Uconn in a thriller. Uconn fans, you can thank Kemba Walker for deciding to slack it off and not try to get a good shot at the end of the game. But Lousiville just lost to Providence last week lets not forget, and then Providence goes and beats another top 10 team in Villanova. Does that make Providence competitive now in the conference? They do have the 7th leading scorer in division one in Marshon Brooks (23.4 ppg). Then you think Nova might have just had a bad day, Georgetown who had been struggling goes to Nova and shoots the lights out. Austin Freeman went for 30. Oh, and what about Syracuse? Sure they lost 3 big east games in a row, not to mention one loss was to Seton Hall, well basically just Jeremy Hazel. But that doesn't mean Syracuse is irrelevant now by any means, they could go right back out and win the conference. And as for Seton Hall, you can thank the guy who shot Jeremy Hazel for them not being more competitive in the Big East. West Virginia is another team that, if they can stay healthy, is going to be a tournament caliber team. They beat Purdue, a top 10 team, not to mention they blew out Providence who just a week later beats 2 top 20 teams. What about St.Johns? They are hanging around, they did beat ND and Georgetown. And don't think about ruling out a good and competitive Marquette team either, they beat ND and WV. What does this all mean? Well in my mind it means you could take 14 teams from the Big East and put them in the tournament. Of course they wont happen, but it definitely should happen. The only conference that could make a statement for beating the Big East would be the Big 10, and i couldn't see them doing it. So at the end of the day, you just need to wait it out. And as a Big East team, win at home and you can make a run. One more thing, while this was all happening, Syracuse is down 10 late to Marquette. The Big East, a marvel of college basketball if there ever was one.

All-Star Reserves and such

So David Stern is allowed to select a replacement for Yao but I still don't get how he made it.
I agree that there are too many good players in both confrences, especially the best. You know big Timmy D and Dirk will get it, I'll go with russel Westbrook and Deron Williams too. It will be a shame if Blake doesn't get it and then Kevin Love as well. My seventh from the west would be Lamar or Gasol, prob Lamar, or maybe his good season is too under the radar and they'll give it to Eric Gordon, I believe it will be Lamar though, even if I love the Lakers.

For the East, we gotta get some Celtics in there: Rondo and does Allen still have it? Give to Pierce before be dies of old age haha and then definitely Joe Johnson as well. I like Galinari as well, he's been playing good all season. They'll probably throw another Magic in there too so look out for Richardson or more likely Hedo. Yeah the rest are a stretch but John Wall has been doing pretty good, I don't know about good enough though. How about Terrance Jennings on Milwake too? No Jon Gruden here to say the comishiner will step in and not allow the East to have seven alternates haha.

All Stars

The reserves do not get released until Wednesday i believe. There are not 7 players that deserve an all star bid from the East. Rondo, Pierce, Allen, maybe Joe Johnson. But then who else?

With the West it is near impossible. You need to put in Manu, Deron Williams, Russel Westbrook. But then there are so many good players. You need to consider Blake Griffin, Kevin Love, Tim Duncan, Monta Ellis, Eric Gordon, Tony Parker, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Big Dirk. There are simply too many all stars to choose from.

My list of 7 however would be
-Manu
-D Williams
-Russel Westbrook
-Blake Griffin
-Kevin Love
-Dirk
-Tony Parker

All-Stars 1

Oh my gosh yeah, the all-star selections this year must have been so hard but yeah you raised a good point about Rose and that is prob why he got the all-star start over Rajor "the assist machine" Rondo. I don't get why Yao made the all-star team though haha I thought he only played in like two games this season...?

All Star Line-ups

East
-Derrick Rose
-Dwyane Wade
-Lebron James
-Amare Stoudemire
-Dwight Howard

West
-Kobe Bryant
-Chris Paul
-Carmelo Anthony
-Kevin Durant
-Yao Ming

Who do you think should be the 7 reserve players?

And yes, everyone realizes that Yao Ming is a joke.

Miami Heat (cont.)

I am honestly disappointed with myself for forgetting the Bulls. The Bulls are tied with the Heat for second in the East, after the Bulls beat the Magic tonight. On top of that, both Boozer and Noah have been out for weeks now, and they keep winning. Not to mention Derrick Rose having a MVP caliber season. (24.6 points 8.1 assists) They have a legit shot at taking the Eastern Conference this year, without a doubt. As for the Celtics, they have gotten much better. Is it just me, or do they have an endless amount of centers? They have so many 7 footers they just waste fouls like no other team can. The Celtics need to stay healthy though to beat the Bulls or the Heat. As for Melo, why would the Nuggets not trade him?The NBA has a lot of twists and turns ahead, but I would definitely say the West is so deep its impossible to say. The Hornets are playing great ball too, they have won 10 in a row. Chris Paul is getting the all star game start. Its such a deep conference, with so much offensive talent, its a toss up in the end. I feel bad for the people that have to pick the all star team.

Re: Miami Heat

As soon as that guy wasted a half hour of my life making me wait to hear him say the most infamous line in sports today, I too thought that the Heat would not win a championship this year. Not with the talent left in the East and the team that will represent the West in the championship. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Celtics, although a year older, only got better this offseason. Also, the Magic made a big time trade that I was skeptical about first but it has shown to be a major improvement for them. The Knicks record (just above .500) does not represent the potential they have to beat a team like the Heat on any given night. Do not sleep on the Bulls (Wizards have shown how deadly guard play is) or the Atlanta Hawks. From the West, no matter who the team is, they will have to be very good at defense to contain the high powered offenses of San Antonio, Dallas, Oklahoma City, both Los Angles, etc. There is no way, in my mind, the Heat will win a championship this year. However, I think it is possible they win it next year and the year after because once they start working together and that teams get some chemistry (and consistency at who's play what position) they can be deadly. P.S. I think Melo will end the season in Denver then New York will get him in offseason and not have to trade anyone to get him, he's just not worth it for this season.

Miami Heat

Just weighing in on the season so far for the heat, and more importantly Lebron James. From the beginning of the season i believed the Heat would never be able to make it to the finals, especially this year. On top of the fact that I feel like i haven't seen all three of them healthy since week one, its clear Lebron and D wade can't fully play together. The most success is with them not together on the court. Chris Bosh almost seems like an afterthought, but without him in the last 6 they have gone 2-4, and have given up 10 more points a game. Even when they all are playing, they look like they all think they are too good. No team is going to win a championship with one guy playing 1 on 3 every possession. Thats exactly what the Heat are. Though second in the east, the Magic are now stacked with promise and talent, and the Knicks will have Melo in the next couple weeks (it really isn't a question in my mind). So what does this mean for the Heat? Bottom line, Lebron isn't king in Miami, D wade is. All i see is conflict and most likely, an early playoff exit from either the Celts or the Knicks.
